Vatican: “It’s not like we’re the only ones molesting children”

The Catholic Church. No, they didn’t create child molestation, they just made it an art form.

Sexual abuse not just a Catholic problem: Vatican

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Sexual abuse of children is not just a Catholic Church problem and other institutions should take steps to acknowledge and deal with such “wickedness” within their own ranks, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

The Vatican’s chief spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, also said the record $660 million settlement between the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and victims of sexual abuse was an attempt to “close a painful chapter and look forward.”

“The Church is above all clearly pained by the suffering of the victims and their families, by the deep wounds caused by the grave and inexcusable behavior of some of its members,” Lombardi said.

“It has decided to commit itself in every way to avoid a repetition of such wickedness,” he said, adding that the Church now had a “a policy of prevention and creation of an ever more secure atmosphere for children and young people in all aspects of (its) pastoral programs.”

Lombardi reaffirmed a position taken by other Catholic Church leaders in the past — that other organized religions and institutions should also deal with paedophilia as publicly as the Catholic Church has been forced to by various scandals.

“The problem of the abuse of childhood and its adequate protection certainly does not regard only the (Catholic) Church, but also many other institutions and it is right that these take the necessary decisions as well,” he said.

Lombardi said the Church was aware of its educational responsibilities to youth and intended to be “a protagonist in the struggle against paedophilia,” which he said was on the rise worldwide.

So if you’ve been molested by a Catholic priest, remember, other kids have been molested by people that aren’t Catholic priests.

Now get back to tithing.

Of course it would be a lot easier to take them seriously if Ratzinger would frankly confess about his own efforts at hiding this stuff from the authorities.

    Words fail………….

  3. It’s so…childish.

Let’s say to start that it’s true; every one of the major Western religions has a poor track record protecting children. I don’t know of any rabbis pinched for molestation, but the typical rabbinical response is that “Jews don’t do that.” The truth is that children of any religion who have gone to religious authorities for protection have been, at the very least, disappointed.

But “they did it too” as a response to a crime of this magnitude, meanwhile (as oddjob says) covering up their own complicity in allowing it to continue is…both evil and so fucking schoolyard.

. . . other organized religions and institutions should also deal with paedophilia as publicly as the Catholic Church has been forced to by various scandals

I believe “has been forced to” would be the operative words in the above phrase. Perhaps I would even add “kicking and screaming” …

  6. NameChanged

They are guilty of cover-up and moving in such a fashion that they are participants in the molestation. If my cousin molests a child, and I tell police, parents, and other concerned parties that no such thing happened and I have proof, and besided my cousin moved to a “school” in the mountains, then I am guilty of the crime as well.

I live alarmingly near a Catholic compound for pedophile/priests that have been relocated several times and have reoffended. It is an entire monastery of fucking assholes who took the faith of their followers and corrupted it for their own fucking pleasure. Blech.

  7. oddjob

then I am guilty of the crime as well

Isn’t that usually called “aiding and abetting”?

I think what’s most irritating about this all (as opposed to appalling) is the sheer crappiness of their PR/communications effort. Seriously- that’s the statement they came up with?

It makes me kind of want to go re-organize their office & train them on good communications.

  9. one of the biggest legal scams has been the one where the catholic church has been able to declare each diocese to be an independant financial entity. the claims against boston, the claims against l.a., the claims should be taken “california deep pockets law” style straight to rome. fuck them, they should be selling art and shit to pay this off. break the bastards, make it hurt sez i.

  10. So if you’ve been molested by a Catholic priest, remember, other kids have been molested by people that aren’t Catholic priests.

So consider yourself lucky, punk! No one wants to get diddled by a Presbyterian. How gauche!

What astounds me is that people even entrust their kids to anyone in the Catholic church after all this.

And think of this: with all the hiding and lying, imagine what we DON’T know. I have a feeling that what we do know is a teeny tiny tip of the iceburg.

  12. No one wants to get diddled by a Presbyterian.

totally. those guys have no finesse whatsoever.

One of the particularly lame things about the sad, stupid announcement from the Vatican is that it seriously conflicts with the facts here in Massachusetts. When the Boston Globe exposed this cesspool in ’02 they made a point early on of analyzing it in the context of the region’s other churches and their policies, practices, and histories.

The Roman Catholic Church was the only one – the only one – with a problem of the magnitude they had. NO ONE else even remotely approached the level of evil that was the Archdiocese of Boston! In the past fourty or fifty years there were just a tiny handfull of cases, literally!, involving other religions, and everyone else’s policy was essentially the same – no mercy, no tolerance, report the religious leader to the authorities and bounce him/her out.

The sheer magnitude of the evil involved here is phenomenal……….

Well gee, Lombardi, you’re not a spokesperson for all those “other” groups, are you? Then why are you trying to change the subject to them?

So if you’ve been molested by a Catholic priest, remember, other kids have been molested by people that aren’t Catholic priests.

Y’know, this is what I don’t get about how the Catholic Church is handling this.

Let’s say I were the Pope, and I found out that Catholic priests under my guidance were sexually assaulting or molesting worshippers; here is how I would handle it:

    1) We comply fully with the appropriate authorities in investigating the crimes. As we find them, not 10 years down the line, after we’ve moved the priests in question around to a few dioceses.
    2) I would give an address to Catholics around the world denouncing the actions of those priests; I would state that anyone who engages in this behavior will be turned over to the appropriate authorities, and that Catholics should pray for the souls of those priests that they would find their way clear to rediscover their commitment to God, but never let them be priests again.
    3) I would throw my support to organizations that help the survivors of rape or sexual assault, regardless of their faith, gender or sexual orientation. I would make a public commitment to eradicating the sin of sexual violence, having found it in my house.

Ad hominem – tu quoque. STFU Vatican.

  17. oddjob

Jay in Oregon, that’s pretty much exactly what the other Boston area churches did when they came across pastorly diddlers.

Not the archdiocese. No, THEY lobbied the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic legislature to make sure that when they passed a law mandating adults in professions interacting with children report evidence of child molestation they exempted the priests!

  18. What I would like to know is how come none of these foul bastards have gone to jail? Here in Spain we have just had a similiar case and the judge gave the priest 15 years inside. Not enough but he’s an old bastard so he could croak before they let him out. But still I think the Church did a deal because they only fined the Church 130,000€. But the important part was that they fined the diocese and not the priest so they will have to pày up. If they fined the fucking prist he would just plead his vows of poverty and the victims wouldn’t get a penny.

So how come they don’t go to jail over there? Diddling kids is against the law unless ou are a Catholic priest or some such bullshit?

  19. I believe that a few priests have gone to jail – the worst culprit in Boston, for example, got a stiff sentence. Unfortunately a lot of the abuse uncovered so far is old enough to be beyond the statute of limitations for such prosecutions. Thus, the lawsuits instead.

The large settlements in this country have all involved dioceses.

  20. “So if you’ve been molested by a Catholic priest, remember, other kids have been molested by people that aren’t Catholic priests.”

“No one wants to get diddled by a Presbyterian.”

They don’t have the $660 million in petty cash to transfer to the molestation settlement fund like the Catholics. Tithe, tithe, tithe!

So if you’ve been molested by a Catholic priest, remember, other kids have been molested by people that aren’t Catholic priests.

It’s true: Roman Catholics may have the best hands, but Southern Baptist preachers give the best head.

  23. Jay in Oregon: Let’s say I were the Pope, and I found out that Catholic priests under my guidance were sexually assaulting or molesting worshippers; here is how I would handle it:

and then there’s a whole series of eminently rational ideas …

Doesn’t that sort of thing totally disqualify you from being Pope?

  24. Are we not talking about children being in many cases raped? Why not use that word?
