Tim Johnson Draws a Challenger

The first republican has thrown his hat in the ring against ailing Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D.  Who is it?  State Rep. Joel Dykstra, R-Lincoln County:

South Dakota state Rep. Joel Dykstra (R) has officially entered the race for the Republican nomination to face Sen. Tim Johnson (D) in 2008.

Dykstra filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday and declared himself a “candidate for U.S. Senate.”

“I am very appreciative of the encouragement that I have received in my exploration of a run for the U.S. Senate,” Dykstra said. “My family and I are humbled by the expressions of support we have received from many people from across the state.”

If the guy sounds familiar to you, he should.  He was a leader on the anti-choice side in the South Dakota abortion ban fight, and got off this brilliant bon mot during the campaign to repeal:

“I think ‘rape and incest’ is a buzzword,” said Rep. Joel Dykstra about not including those conditions in the abortion bill. “It’s a bit of a throwaway line and not everybody who says that really understands what that means. How are you going to define that?”

Indeed.  So confusing, this “rape” and this “incest.”  Who can understand complex concepts like those?

  1. Well, I don’t know about you snooty left-wingers, but I’m totally convinced that “rape” and “incest” are just buzzwords for those abortion-loving baby-killers who have yet to realize that women should never, ever have control over their own bodies – let alone their own uteri. Women in control of anything makes the baby Jesus cry, you know.

How are you going to define that?

I’m more than a little surprised that Sen. Johnson isn’t retiring. Didn’t he have a stroke? Don’t misunderstand; I’m glad in this instance that incumbency is a 98% guarantee of winning the election. I’m just surprised he’d put himself through this.

Oh, on the actual point of the post… yeesh, Dykstra is seriously screwed up if that quote reflects his actual views. It reads like he was trying to claim that if you have exceptions for rape and incest in an abortion ban, that every woman will claim to be in the exception. Which is itself misogynistic and messed up. Hopefully, this means Johnson will clean his clock next year.

There are strokes and there are strokes. Apparently he believes he hasn’t been sufficiently damaged that he ought not run for re-election.

You can leave a message explaining that “rape and incest” is not a “buzzword” (and give him a grammar lesson as well) for Rep. Dykstra here. Thanks!
