Where the White Women At?

Oh no, Mark Steyn has discovered that the end of Western Civilization is nigh! It’s all tied to this article in The Economist, which tells a dire tale:

A NEW disease is abroad in eastern Germany: Frauenmangel, lack of women. In some towns there are only 75 young women for every 100 young men. In one or two there are as few as 40. The effects are worrying, not only because populations may shrink but also because of the existence of a growing underclass of young men who are partnerless, underqualified and jobless.

Dear me, what’s this dread disease? Is it some problem with childbirth? Some unsecured bioweapon from the old DDR days? Are we about to live an inverse version of Y: The Last Man? Tell me, for God’s sake, what evil has led to the decimation of the female population of the former East Germany? The fate of life as we know it may hang in the balance!

Girls are more studious than boys, so they get better qualified and migrate west to find both partners and jobs. The boys lack role models at home, where fathers are often unemployed, and at school, where teachers are mostly female. Young men now account for 65% of German high-school dropouts.

Oh. Feminism. Right.

You see — funny story — given the choice between staying in an area with a battered economy and no hope of a decent life, women who have the choice often, you know, move somewhere else where they can live a better life.

I know, I know, they should be forcibly repatriated and made to conceive white children, but those damn feminists think that women shouldn’t be forced into marriage. Crazy, I know.

Now, one can certainly argue that more needs to be done to bolster the economy in eastern Germany, but only Mark Steyn can take what appears to be a serious question of economics and turn it into an alarm that the Europeans are Eurofleein‘!

Few countries have ever been less in need of lebensraum.

Ha ha! And that’s a bad thing, see, ’cause when Germany last claimed to need lebensraum, they started a war that killed tens of millions, including six million Jews!

Oh. Wait, that’s not funny.

The New Republic‘s hit piece on the NR cruise may think the thesis of my book is racist drivel…

Well, that could be because it’s racist drivel.

…but the UN population division agrees with its statistical foundation: Eastern Germany and Eastern Europe are in steep population decline; Western Germany and Western Europe are in rapid population transformation. And as the UN says, what’s underway is without parallel in human history.

Ah, yes, the old demographics equal destiny canard.

You see, Mark, the best way to create a bulwark against Eurabia — not that it’s coming anytime soon, mind you, but let’s pretend it is — would be to strengthen liberal democratic ideals such as freedom of religion and freedom of speech. A secular government is far less likely to turn into a Muslim government than a Christian government is. The former change requires a wholesale change of system; the latter simply requires redecorating the churches.

While you’re at it, push for more rights for women and gays and minorities — rights given now will be hard to take away in the future. If you do it right, by the time the evil brown-skinned masses are the majority in Europe, they’ll be so thoroughly westernized that they wouldn’t dream of changing things up. Oh, many will still be Muslim…but western society has managed to work with Christians and Jews and Buddhists and Hindus and Unitarians and Pagans and even atheists. I think it will survive Islam as well.

Then again, you could follow Steyn’s advice and try to make Europe more like Saudi Arabia, by forcing women to breed and curtailing the “decadence” that the evil brown ones hate so. That may seem like purest idiocy, but the plan has one salient feature: when the scary Muslims finally reestablish their caliphate in Paris, they won’t have to change the laws at all.

The sad part is that this isn’t even new thinking in American conservatism. John Gibson and Pat Robertson (among others) got there first.

Hell, this was a basic component of Nazism.

(Yes, I know I’m flirting with Godwin’s Law.)

Especially since it’s an article about Germany, oddjob. 😉

This seems to be a feature of economies that experience a rapid boom combined with free travel, though, at least in my extremely unscientific experience. This concept of a Frauenmangel is something I read about 5 or 6 years ago. At the time it was accompanied by a more general fear of malaise (collapsing industry, etc) in the East due to an exodus of the younger generation westward, where jobs and money were to be had on an non-Warsaw Pact scale. Korea has a similar phenomenon. There’s a market in the rural areas for Vietnamese mail-order brides among the men who maintain their small farms in those regions, even to the point where there are billboards advertising the middlemen for such arrangements.

I remember reading an article about how young Japanese women were “delaying” marriage, and that that was driving their demographics. One quote that stuck with me was a 30ish woman saying, “I’ve seen the job of wife, and I don’t want it.”

When women seek what’s good for them, it changes the world, make no mistake. I just happen to think that it’s, overall, a change for the better. Japan could really use a population reduction.

China has a similar problem, though I think it’s more serious. The longstanding preference for males in that country has collided with the one-child policy to produce 120 males for every 100 females below the age of 15 or so. This worries me. This isn’t about women making choices about what’s better for them, it’s about parents getting rid of female infants, in one way or another. Pile on top of that the freedom that women now have to move to a city and make a better life, and we’ll have a lot of single young men in a few years.

Young men who are married, or at least have a commitment to some form of family are a lot less likely, statistically, to commit crimes or violence. Am I saying it’s the job of women to prevent this? No. It just scares me.

I’ve been told before that in traditional Japanese society a married woman addresses her husband not by saying his name, but by saying, “My husband.” I’m not surprised to learn an educated, employed Japanese woman might not want to choose the life of a traditional wife.

  7. I went to college with several students from Japan.

Three of the four Japanese women I knew married Americans and stayed in the United States.

I was a good friend to one of these women. Her family expected her to return to Japan, work for several years, and then get married. She grew to resent her family’s expectations. In four years, I saw her transform from a shy, timid girl into an outspoken and confident woman.

I have to imagine that a big part of what’s happening is that women are going away to school and simply not returning home.

    So very true.

That’s why we don’t have car bombings in major U.S. cities. Our Muslim population is enjoying the freedoms they have here. Take those freedoms away, and you’ll have a huge increase in terrorism.

Unfortunately, the civil liberties of gay and lesbian Americans are rapidly being chipped away. If it goes much further — taking away the rights to marry, work, raise children, etc. — we’re certain to see gay people blowing themselves up at straight people’s weddings. There’s only so much abuse any population can take before they strike back.

But if that is so, why are the Blighty-born-&-raised children of ex-pat. Muslims becoming terrorists (or terrorist wannabes)? Sully has linked to a post suggesting extensive connections “back home” have an influence. Perhaps the difference in our case, in addition to the more free society, is the difficulty of travelling easily back across the ocean “to home” very often?

My ex has many British relatives.

I was amazed at how prejudiced they are toward what they call “Pakis.”

South Asians are widely discriminated against in the U.K.

I don’t think the terror strikes there have much to do with travelling back home. British society is extremely classist. South Asians are largely viewed as inferior, former colonials.

    Fair observation.

It still leaves the question. Despite being primarily a nation of immigrants, the new immigrants here are almost universally treated poorly and meet open hostility and discrimination (it’s almost a rite of passage – the one we don’t like to talk about or think about), but you don’t seem to encounter as many stories about extremists here as you do for Europe, even though in some ways their societies are more open, tolerant, and free than ours is.
