Brace Yourselves, Shakers

The surge isn’t working:

Three months into the new U.S. military strategy that has sent tens of thousands of additional troops into Iraq, overall levels of violence in the country have not decreased, as attacks have shifted away from Baghdad and Anbar, where American forces are concentrated, only to rise in most other provinces, according to a Pentagon report released yesterday.

Perhaps the Bush administration could consult this tiny child to find out what went wrong with their awesome strategery:

The laugh I got from the photo was almost enough to make me stop crying about the rest of it.

  2. Yes! The Whack-a-Mole Doctrine! I hope that enters into the vernacular!

  3. Fucking hell. *headdesk* I hate these daily (hourly? minutely?) reminders of the inexorable truth that my dogs are more capable of running this country.

    The photo is priceless, though.

Indeed. As a metaphor, it’s far more apt than the Flypaper Doctrine.

  6. Yeah, when you squeeze one end of the balloon, what happens to the other end?

    Not working? Well, I never!

Watch Bush say that this means we just need more.

  11. [sarcasm] you don’t understand. all the evidence shows that the surge is working. we decided it before it began you see if the violence went up that means the insurgency is getting “last throes desperate” ergo, the surge is working, were violence to go down (shut up! it could! sometime) it would be because of the surge. just remember, everything that happens proves that the surge is working! [/sarcasm]

The real problem, as I see it, isn’t the Whack-a-Mole problem. It’s the fact that the “surge” does nothing to help the Iraqis take over their own country. We’ve done these surges before under different names (troop extensions, etc.) and they didn’t work then. Because all they do is temporarily quell some violence or move it to other parts of the country while doing nothing to get the Iraqi Security Forces involved in taking over from Coalition troops. Which is what would eventually get us the hell out of that country. As long as we continue to handle every Iraqi emergency ourselves instead of forcing the Iraqi government and security forces to figure it out themselves, we will get no closer to getting out of that country.
