War on Terror + Cold War = Ultimate Neocon fantasy

You know, haven’t we all missed the old days, when we’d get to hear daily about the inevitable threat to our very existence in the form of a nuke storm? Well, those Cold War days are coming back.

Putin: U.S. has triggered new arms race

President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that tests of new Russian missiles were a response to the planned deployment of U.S. missile defense installations and other forces in Europe, suggesting Washington has triggered a new arms race.

In a clear reference to the United States, he harshly criticized “imperialism” in global affairs and warned that Russia will strengthen its military potential to maintain a global strategic balance.

“It wasn’t us who initiated a new round of arms race,” Putin said when asked about Russia’s missile tests at a news conference after talks in the Kremlin with Greek President Karolos Papoulias.

This is fantastic news for the PNAC death brigade, who are secretly enthralled at the chances the U.S. can reignite wars with Vietnam, Korea, Central America, Spain, Native Americans and England while one of their own remains at the helm.

I think it’s time for a little song about a turtle named Bert.

There was a turtle by the name of Bert
And Bert the Turtle was very alert
When danger threatened him he never got hurt
He knew just what to do

He’d duck and cover, duck and cover
He’d hide his head and tail and four little feet
    He’d duck and cover!

He hid beneath his little shell until the coast was clear
Then one by one his head and tail and legs would reappear
By acting calm and cool he proved he was a hero, too
For finding safety is the bravest wisest thing to do

And now his little friends are just like Bert
And every turtle is very alert
When danger threatens them they never get hurt
They know just what to do

They duck and cover, duck and cover
They hide their heads and tails and four little feet
    They duck and cover!

They duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, and cover”

I knew I’d need that degree in Russian eventually. I missed the first Cold War, but honestly, I wasn’t hoping for a repeat. I was thinking along the lines of a greater detente. Oh well.

  4. Actually, Lawyers, Guns and Money had a post, Reading Pravda which mentioned this the other day. The missiles aren’t new, and nothing has really changed, it’s mostly sabre rattling. There was also an article in the NY Times called Rice Clashes With Russian on Kosovo and Missiles which talked about the tensions between the U.S. and Russia. I wouldn’t worry about the cold war so much, it’s the new Global War On Terror/Global War To Keep The Oil To Ourselves And Keep It Away From Everyone Else that I’d worry about.
