Another Beat of the Drum

Following on the heels of the drumbeating outlined by Wolfrum in his earlier post comes this charming rat-a-tat-tat: Bush Authorizes New Covert Action Against Iran.

The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert “black” operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, say President Bush has signed a “nonlethal presidential finding” that puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran’s currency and international financial transactions.

…Officials say the covert plan is designed to pressure Iran to stop its nuclear enrichment program and end aid to insurgents in Iraq. … Current and former intelligence officials say the approval of the covert action means the Bush administration, for the time being, has decided not to pursue a military option against Iran.

Hmm. A leak about a nonlethal presidential finding to mount a covert “black” operation to destabilize the Iranian government, which is meant to try to avert military action against Iran.

And thusly continues the Bush administration’s coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation, and manipulation in America, as well.

Because, really, who the fuck knows if this was a deliberate leak by the administration designed to avert attention from their real plan (military action), which would follow the same storyline as the lead-up to the Iraq War, or a deliberate leak by the administration to blusteringly make believe they have a plan for effectively containing Iran, even though everyone from here to Esfahan knows full bloody well they don’t, or a deliberate leak by the generals who know that Cheney is beating the war drum and that he’s fucking nuts, trying to head off a catastrophic confrontation they fear is imminent…

Honestly. Who fucking knows anymore.

Meanwhile, the wingnutosphere goes nuts, as per usual.

Chesck out Wolfrums post below for more on the coming conflict with Iran.

    Fuck.

  4. This goes to the heart of transparency in government. When there is none, you don’t know what to believe.

  6. So what happens if these covert actions go awry and we end up with a real war on our hands?

  7. Grandjester

    John,

    I am afraid that’s actually the plan(s).

Either one of these carrier groups hits a mine or somesuch OR one of these covert ops goes south and we have to mount a rescue or somesuch.

Either course would require immediate action by the Commander Guy so we wouldn’t need to consult with that pesky ol’ congress before we were engaged. Fait accompli.

  8. Well, yes, I can see that if the US attempts to destabilize the Iranian government, of course they’re going to back off in Iraq. Uh-huh. What could possibly go wrong?

Another fine plan from the guy who went on vacation while Bin Laden was arranging air tickets…

  9. I love this bloody comment from the wingnutosphere:

Ross and ABC News have purposefully undermined the non-military removal of a government that is a proud state sponsor of terrorism.

Lessee – what happens if there’s a “non-military” removal of Iran’s government? At a rough guess, you’d get something resembling the post-Soviet Afghanistan sitting on top of a large part of the global oil supply and right next to a critical transport area for another large part of said oil supply.

    Uh-huh. That’s just what we want…
