New Moon

Elliott Smith’s 2-disc posthumous album has been released, and I love and treasure it immensely. I don’t recommend it for new Elliott listeners, though; pick up XO, either/or and his self-titled album first; these songs are discarded tracks from his recording sessions on the latter two and do a beautiful job of rounding them out. And XO is just one of the best albums of the ’90s, and you should own it.

  1. The other day, Barnes & Noble sent out ads saying Jeff Buckley had a new album coming out. I was drinking coffee. My keyboard will never be the same.

I know the idea of the posthumous album is widely mocked, but in this case, these tracks actually add to his ouevre.

And we do it with authors all the time…hell, John Kennedy Toole’s mother found A Confederacy of Dunces in a drawer after he killed himself.

hasn’t 2Pac released more albums dead than he did while he was alive?
